Chinese Family Associations begin to be formed in Chinatown.

Known as huiguans, their membership is based on family or geographic ties. meant to The Chin, Lee, Moy, Wong, Yee, and other families form these organizations to promote kinship among different generations within families and assist settlement in the U.S. But according to Michael Liu, “Yet even though they performed some useful functions, the associations exacerbated existing conflicts among Chinese immigrants, who often became fiercely loyal to one group over others.”
